Have you ever been to Katie’s Pizza in Richmond Heights? Awesome atmosphere, adorable decor. But it was a tough spot for the gluten-free gal or gent, with limited gluten-free options. You had to eat a salad (albeit, a delicious one) while the rest of your party nommed on some really awesome-looking pizza.
But Katie’s new endeavor, Katie’s Pizza and Pasta, in Rock Hill, is a dream. They offer gluten-free wood-fired pizza AND a variety of gluten-free pastas. Plus Omission beer and Angry Orchard Cider.
Funded in part by a Kickstarter campaign, it’s located in a pretty unexpected spot – right in the middle of a strip mall in Rock Hill. But walk in, and it’s like you’re right in the heart of downtown Clayton or Central West End. It’s a chic, sophisticated spot with eclectic decor. Candles, unique light fixtures and roses dot the restaurant. Chairs are mismatched, and the gorgeous wood bar is handmade.
Ken and I met his dad there for dinner last Saturday. Even at 6:00, the crowd was already picking up. We had cocktails at the bar while waiting for our table. Ken get the Cowboy Bebop – made with gin, rosemary, green tea, simple syrup, lemon and lavender bitters. I’m not a gin fan usually, but this was a pleasant cocktail. I got the “old fashioned old fashioned,” which was also really good.
So what to get for the main attraction?? Similar to the Richmond Heights restaurant, Katie’s Pizza and Pasta offers the fried artichoke salad, with artichokes, pistachios, goat cheese, spring mix, and balsamic vinaigrette. The “fried” in this case just means pan fried, so you are safe. And the server confirmed the goat cheese they use is gluten-free.
I went a little goat cheese crazy – and also ordered the fig and squash pizza, topped with roasted butternut squash, black mission figs, pancetta, goat cheese and balsamic. It was a little goat cheese overload situation, but that was my fault for also choosing the goat cheese salad. But regardless, this pizza was really, really good. It was the perfect mixture of savory (the squash and goat cheese) and sweet (the mission figs). The pancetta tied it all together with a perfect, salty ending.
So I’ll make the statement … this crust is now officially my favorite pizza in St. Louis. That’s a tall statement, I realize. But it’s true. Yes, there is a $5 upcharge, which makes for a pretty expensive pizza. But, it was so good that I didn’t mind. And I’ll definitely be back.
