Pearl #35: Gluten-free at Bailey’s Chocolate Bar

February 6, 2014 by Kate 2 Comments

Bailey’s Chocolate Bar has long been one of my faves for a date night or a girls’ night. I went there over the holidays with my good friend Molly who was visiting from NYC, her cousin Kelly and their two friends. It was a crowded night, but we apparently had that perfect party size, because we were seated almost immediately. Bailey’s is in the same group of restaurants as some of my other faves in this world…Rooster, Bridge and Bailey’s Range (see post).

I had just planned to grab a drink, but suddenly, I spotted it there, just sitting innocently on the menu.

FLOURLESS MOLTEN CAKE
Served with Coffee Ice Cream – $7.00

When the server swung around, I asked him if the cake, the sauce and the ice cream was totally gluten-free. He said yes. So I said yes. #treatyoself
***Sidebar: God, I’m glad that gluten-free, flourless chocolate cakes somehow became trendy. I’d like to thank the Pastry Chef that arranged this coup.

It was VERY rich, but the coffee ice cream was the perfect lighter balance to the molten sweetness. I only ate about half and then shared with the others I was with. You win a prize if you finish this bad boy on your own.

Since I was about to send my blood sugar through the roof with this molten deliciousness, I opted for a standard Old Fashioned vs. one of their dessert drinks. Plus, there was some confusion about whether the chocolate dessert martinis (which they are known for) were gluten-free, so I avoided that path. A call to the restaurant earlier this week while I was writing this blog post did not clear up the confusion, so you’ll have to try asking your server when you arrive.

For the gluten-free diner, I wouldn’t recommend Bailey’s Chocolate Bar for full-on dinner, as they primarily only have pizzas and small plates that are not GF. They do have cheese plates that could be served without bread if you’re just looking for a savory bite. If you’re looking for dessert, the flourless molten cake is your only big dessert; though they do have other house-made ice creams that are gluten-free.

It’s still a fantastic atmosphere for a date or a night with girlfriends, so get on over there and help yourself to a molten cake.

Enjoy!

Until next time,
Kate

I am really enjoying your blog and passing it along to Paleo & Gluten Free friends! I don’t get to eat out as much as I would like to because of the kids and you have become my go-to for deciding where to maybe meet friends, based on what is available. Thanks so much. If you would like to ever meet up or collaborate on blogging sometime, I think it would be fun! Best wishes.

So glad to hear it’s been helpful! There is so much great paleo/GF food in St. Louis…you just have to dig for it. Let me know if you stumble across any great places! Would love to chat about collaborating. Cheers.
