Pearl #17: Gluten-free at zPizza in Clayton

June 15, 2013 by Kate Leave a Comment

It’s been a rough week. I’ve got the bronch. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

So today, I needed an excursion. I had to get out into the real world, and I was craving some pizza.

I’ve driven past zpizza in Clayton a few times but have never stopped in. On a whim I googled to see if they had gluten-free pizza. And yes – they do! According to their website, they pride themselves on using organic ingredients, all natural chicken, and MSG- and nitrate-free meats. They even have eco-friendly bike delivery.

I have to admit. My taste buds were not in top shape due to my last week battling the bronch. However, it was still a solid pizza.

Ken and I started with a Greek Salad – mixed greens, feta, Greek olives, red onions, tomatoes, cucumber, oregano, with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The staff wasn’t sure about the allergens in the salad dressing, but after post-meal perusal on the website, I learned the dressing was GF. You can see the list of gluten-free options on their website. For today, I stuck with the the red pepper olive oil as my dressing.Greek Salad Gluten Free zpizza

For pizza, we went halfises on the large gluten-free crust. The server said basically everything can be prepared gluten-free except the Thai Pizza. We decided on half Tuscan – roasted garlic sauce, mozzarella, cremini, shiitake and button mushrooms, caramelized onions, feta, truffle oil, thyme, and half ZBQ: bbq sauce, mozzarella, bbq chicken, roasted peppers, red onions, fresh rounds of tomatoes, cilantro, and sweet corn.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the ZBQ, but the BBQ pizza concept in general has never quite been a home run with me.

The Tuscan was fab. The caramelized onions and truffle oil added great flavor and the cheese was a perfect complement. The crust was a pretty good effort. It was on the sweeter side, but definitely was a great crust for the white pizza flavors. It could have used a bit more crisping in the middle, but the edge was done very well.

If you’re looking for ambiance, there are places with better atmosphere, but it makes a great carry-out option. They also have a patio that would be great for a nice day out. I’ll definitely be back!

Until next time,
Kate
