Pearl #19: Gluten-free at Home Wine Kitchen in Maplewood

June 30, 2013 by Kate Leave a Comment

Let’s just get it out there and say…Home Wine Kitchen in Maplewood is adorable. One of the neat little restaurants that is making Maplewood oh-so-chic, Home Wine Kitchen is simply a must try.

Specifically, you must try their No Menu Monday. I saw an Instagram photo from Sauce Magazine of their veal meatballs over polenta with blueberry wine sauce and knew I had to go ASAP.

The smart cookie that you are, you’ve probably already guessed what it is…but No Menu Monday is when their chef prepares you a three-course menu just for you, after asking you the following questions:

For a foodie and gluten-free gal like myself, this is so perfect! Who doesn’t love a little mystery in their lives? And, they straight up ask you if you are allergic to anything. If you’re open and adventurous to food, I strongly recommend you try this. Picky eaters: this No Menu Monday might not be for you.

So I know you’re dying by now to know what I had.

OK.

First Course:
Cajun Shrimp with Grits and Andouille Sausage. ZOMG. The shrimp was fantastic – huge, juicy, flavorful prawns. The andouille sausage was cut into bite size pieces, adding perfect zest to the grits. The grits were on the plain side and could have used more kick, but incorporating the sausage amped it up.

Second Course:
Chicken thighs braised with white wine and garlic, and roasted brussel sprouts. I hadn’t thought I was in the mood for chicken (much less thighs), but I have never tasted anything so delicious and juicy. This was some seriously good stuff. Such simple ingredients, but unbelievably flavorful.

Third Course:
Good question…It was some custardy, caramel-y dessert that had a hint of coffee and was VERY rich. I wasn’t a huge fan, so the name of this dessert has escaped me.

They also offered fantastic wine pairings with the courses, for only $12.

If you’re bold with food and appreciate the element of surprise, this place is for you. The atmosphere is lovely – perfect for a date, with your family, or even with girlfriends. I can’t wait to go back!

Until next time,

Kate
