Pearl #39: Gluten-free at Favazza’s, St. Louis

May 22, 2014 by Kate Leave a Comment

Ok, wow, so I heart Favazza’s on The Hill. I had no idea they had a dedicated gluten-free menu, but stumbled across them at the bottom of a very buried Yelp list a while back, gave them a call and knew I had to get there ASAP. They have gluten-free pasta, gluten-free pizza, and gluten-free salads.

So to start off, I have a serious question. What is it about Italian restaurant house salads?? Why are they so amazing? And it’s never that good when you try to recreate it at home, even if you’re using the exact same dressing. They’re magicians, I guess. That was a pretty big lead-up, so yes, in case you’re wondering, this dinner salad did not disappoint.

But the big star of the show was this glorious baked mostaccioli with Italian sausage. This is not on their official gluten-free menu, but our server confirmed that all of the ingredients are gluten-free. You have the option of getting it baked – and the only correct response to this question is, Yes, bake it. I mean, check out that beautiful layer of cheese. It comes sizzling out of the kitchen in its own cast-iron skillet, topped with two Italian sausages. Ken was super jealous.

No joke, this thing is huge. This picture doesn’t even look like I made a dent, but I swear I did. I ended up getting three meals out of it, when you count leftovers.

The only thing that could have made this more amazing? Gluten-free bread. But overall, it was a fantastic GF experience. Thanks, Favazza’s!

Until next time,
Kate
